چکیده

Two roof structures representing vintage unreinforced masonry (URM) building components were subjected to longitudinal pseudo-static cyclic loading. The overall dimensions 8.94 m (span) by 3.1 (length), with each incorporating a pair of as-built timber trusses that retrieved from two demolished URM buildings. Both roofs tested first nailed connections original construction and then again included proprietary metal brackets straps remediation the construction. loading was applied perpendicular trusses, hence parallel diaphragm purlins. Damage patterns deformation profiles used interpret mechanics governing behaviour utilizing existing modelling techniques for floors. It found shear-dominated, akin in-plane response For direction loading, both stiffness strength governed between purlin members spacing. Consistent these findings, method suggested estimate similar may have different aspect ratios using results tests. A comparison various test showed implementing upgrades focused on significantly improved strength.

Scaling unreinforced masonry for reduced-scale seismic testing

When testing multi-storey structures, most testing facilities require the testing of a reduced-scale model. A literature review on tests of scaled masonry structural components revealed that scaling of masonry was rather challenging and often significant differences in stiffness, strength and failure mechanisms between the different sized masonry were reported. This paper addresses the scaling ...

Seismic Design of Box-Type Unreinforced Masonry Buildings Through Direct Displacement-Based Approach

In the last decade, displacement-based seismic design procedures have been recognised to be effective alternatives to force-based design (FBD) methods. Indeed, displacement based design (DBD) may allow the structural engineer to get more realistic predictions of local and global deformations of the structure, and hence damage, under design earthquakes. This facilitates the achievement of perfor...

Testing unreinforced masonry structures at reduced scale

When testing multi-story structures on a shaking table, most testing facilities require a reduced scale model. Producing scale test units at small scale is particularly challenging for unreinforced masonry structures. Previous work by other researchers showed that scaling of units and mortar joints is mandatory in order to obtain for the reduced scale masonry failure modes, which are similar to...

Damage Accumulation in Unreinforced Masonry Due to Seismic Loading

Masonry has low cohesive strength and is susceptible to the brittle failure, when subjected to induced tensile stresses. It fails due to lateral tensile stresses even when masonry prisms are tested in uni-axial static compression and the stress-strain curve remains almost linear up to failure. Although masonry normally resists compressive forces, under lateral in-plane cyclic loads some parts o...

Towards Displacement-Based Seismic Design of Modern Unreinforced Masonry Structures

Unreinforced masonry (URM) structures are known to be rather vulnerable to seismic loading. Modern URM buildings with reinforced concrete (RC) slabs might, however, have an acceptable seismic performance for regions of low to moderate seismicity. In particular in countries of moderate seismicity it is often difficult to demonstrate the seismic safety of modern URM buildings by means of force-ba...
